The gut-brain axis
Through decades of research, scientists have established the strong bi-directional connection between the gut and the brain, modulated by neurons, neurotransmitters, hormones, and immune mediators.
The existence of this communication is the reason why our cognitive faculties and our emotions are mutually related to our intestinal well-being.
More recently, focus has been extended to the role of gut microbiota (the trillions of microorganisms residing in the gut). Increasing evidence supports the concept of bidirectional communication between the neuroendocrine system and gut microbiota. Disturbances in both systems have been associated with a plethora of disorders, such as depression and irritable bowel syndrome. Recent findings further indicate the ability of gut microbiota to influence the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis, one of the body’s major neuroendocrine systems involved in stress-responses, immune system activity and in the regulation of mood and emotions.
That is why a holistic approach is essential when taking care of ourselves, thus sustaining our mental, intestinal, and physical health.
