Sustainable packaging

  1. Dr. Schär
  2. Sustainable packaging

As part of our sustainability strategy, packaging plays an important role in our efforts to reduce our environmental footprint. For our consumers, it is important our products are provided in packaging that is safely gluten-free but also preserves the taste. At the same time, we want to reduce the amount of waste from our products without compromising on quality and safety

We strive to optimise our use of packaging materials and to adjust them for the future: That is why we are rethinking the way we use plastics and looking for innovative packaging solutions.

    • Beginning in 2024, we will start the final phase of the transition to fully recyclable, recycled, or compostable packaging materials.
    • We have also set ourselves the ambitious target of reducing the use of plastic materials in product packaging by 25% until the end of 2024.

On the way to sustainable packaging, we have defined three strategic goals:

  1. Eliminating all unnecessary packaging and reducing packaging sizes.
  2. Helping consumers to dispose of packaging properly by providing information on recycling and simple instructions on packaging.
  3. Monitor and evaluate progress on environmentally friendly packaging for a waste-free future.

The new sustainable recipe for the bread market

Our recipe for sustainability
Sustainable food packaging in 2021

We already reached a first milestone in the development of sustainable food packaging in 2021, launching the world’s first gluten-free bread packaging made with certified circular plastic.

The new packaging of Schär Panini Rolls consists of 46 % recycled plastic from chemically recycled mixed post-consumer plastics.

Introducing Master Baker Next

We’re proud to present the innovative, sustainable, new packaging of Master Baker, one of the world’s most loved Schär products. By reducing the film and eliminating the tray, we’ve managed to lower our overall use of plastic in Master Baker packaging by 38% and the overall plastic use for Schär packaging by 15%, a number that represents a chance to bring about real change.

A milestone: The transition from plastic to paper

Our commitment to sustainability also focuses on the transition to more sustainable packaging. We proudly present a milestone in this project: the switch to paper packs for Schär cookies. As a result, we are reducing our plastic consumption by 65 % per product, saving 18 tons per year.

Our way to more sustainable packaging
  1. 2020

Since 2020, 35% of our product packaging has been made from recyclable material.

  2. 2021

Between the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022, we launched new packaging in Europe for gluten-free bread made from recycled plastics. The new packaging of the Panini Rolls is made with 46% recycled plastic from chemically recycled mixed post-consumer plastics.

  3. 2023

In 2023 we will start in some markets to eliminate the tray and reduce the foil from the Artisan Baker product series. Artisan Baker’s packaging represents 38% of the overall Schär plastic packs – the perfect basis to initiate impactful change. This will account for an overall reduction of Schär plastic packaging of 15%.

  4. 2024

In 2024, we plan for the foil of the whole Wholesome Loaf's product series to be recyclable. We have also set ourselves the ambitious target of reducing the use of plastic materials in product packaging by 25% by the end of 2024. To reach this goal, we are constantly working to optimize our current packaging and try to move from plastic to paper wherever possible. Furthermore, beginning in 2024, we will start the final phase of the transition to fully recyclable, recycled, or compostable packaging materials.
