  2. Every Egg Counts: Our 100% Cage-Free Choice all over the world

At Dr. Schär, quality goes beyond the product itself: it means respect for people, the environment and animals. In keeping with this philosophy, we’ve reached a milestone that represents much more than a production choice. From the end of November 2025, all the eggs used in our production sites will come exclusively from cage-free farms, ensuring a better standard of animal welfare.

Commitment that began years ago

Our journey toward exclusively using eggs from cage-free farms has been guided by responsibility and foresight. Since 2016, our egg supply has largely consisted of barn eggs, in many cases anticipating local regulations and market trends. Today, this solid foundation allows us to successfully complete the transition to using only barn eggs, ensuring a more ethical supply chain and consistently high standards across all our production sites.

Although most of our products are cereal-based, eggs are a key ingredient in our recipes. Their sourcing has therefore been subject to careful review and a continuous improvement process that includes audits, on-site inspections and close collaboration with our suppliers. We have introduced exploratory checklists and enlisted the support of expert veterinarians to gain wider know-how.

By achieving 100% cage-free production across all our plants, we reaffirm our commitment to maintaining these standards in future acquisitions – demonstrating that responsibility, quality and sustainability guide every choice we make throughout our supply chain.

Because Cage-Free means care

This milestone reflects our ongoing commitment and echoes the principles enshrined in the 2009 Treaty of Lisbon, which recognises animals as sentient beings and assigns the European Union and its Member States the ethical duty to prevent mistreatment, pain and suffering. For us, these are not just abstract guidelines, but values that we strive to put into practice every day, convinced that animal welfare is an essential part of a fair, sustainable and respectful food system.

Choosing eggs from cage-free farms means allowing hens to move, scratch around, spread their wings and express natural behaviours: simple yet essential actions for their health, behavioural balance and quality of life. This approach also directly influences our products, making them more sustainable and aligned with the expectations of consumers seeking high-quality, transparent and responsible food.

Cultivating a Positive Impact

The transition to 100% cage-free production is the result of a shared journey with our partners and suppliers, built step by step on trust and transparency. Together, we have focused on maintaining high standards without compromising on quality or production performance.

This collaboration has strengthened our conscious value chain model, founded on shared responsibility and transparency, demonstrating that change is possible when innovation and collaboration come together. Every decision taken jointly has helped consolidate sustainable practices and make the entire supply chain more resilient, efficient and respectful of people, animals and the environment.

For us, animal welfare is not just a goal – it’s an integral part of a broader sustainability strategy. Every step, from the responsible selection of raw materials to the sustainable management of resources and innovation in packaging, contributes to building a future where quality, responsibility and respect for life are real, enduring values. This is how we seed a better world – one where people, animals and the environment are protected in a tangible, measurable way.
